The MES market is going through a change. A detailed understanding of the current environment, working procedures and personnel need to be identified. In addition, the key pain points and benefit areas of new systems or the migration from legacy systems have to be showcased. A structured approach will help to identify every single benefit area but also future costs to provide a balanced view. Determine CAPEX and OPEX positions, future operational costs incurred and tangible benefits into the business case.
Migration of MES solutions ultimately lead to headaches in the management, since migrations are extremely difficult to be justified from the cost and benefit perspective. The main motivation for migration is driven by the vendor`s system end-of-lifecycle deadlines. Besides the immense persuasion work within organization migrations differ in complexity. It is recommended to set up a conceptional phase before starting a migration execution project in order to understand the implications on project cost and duration.
Process harmonization is first of all not a matter of IT systems but rather an initiative to increase process stability, data integrity and reduce human errors on the shop floor. Production IT systems such as MES are the vehicle to carry in the harmonized processes into the manufacturing zone. Depending on the process variety in a site network, the process harmonization degree needs to be determined. Process harmonization is a great baseline to kick-off with Manufacturing Intelligence and Data Analytics.
The scope of a project or program sets the guardrails for the necessary governance model and its structure. It is recommended to take time and carefully set up a lean and powerful governance, that is right-sized in accordance to the project or program. The staffing and onboarding process shall be considered early in advance.
CMOs (Contract Manufacturing Organizations) and CDMOs (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organizations) have partially different requirements towards Production IT solutions in comparison to traditional pharma & biotech companies. The main differences result from higher production and planning complexity and the need for flexibility.
